Why You Should Join A Mastermind Group — Achieving Millennial
A few months ago I started attended a once-a-week group that a friend recommended to me, whom I first met networking late last year. I had no idea what a mastermind group was, other than he said I should check it out (it took some dedication, seeing as how it’s at 0730 at Panera). But I’m super excited about how I became a regular, “core” member). Let me share with you why you should join a mastermind group.
First, what is a mastermind group? A mastermind group is a fairly small group of people who share what they accomplished since the last meeting (although they’re not real meetings per se, as they’re very informal) and what everyone has planned until the next meeting. We also read aloud a card featuring a quote from Think and Grow Rich. The key is mentioning what we have done and what we plan on achieving.
I used to be skeptical about the law of attraction, but as time goes on I am becoming more and more of a believer in it. You are who you associate yourself with. If your friends, associates, buddies, or whomever clock in and out and have their lives on repeat you will more than likely do the same. If you associate yourself with high achievers you will most likely find yourself achieving more than what you thought you would. I find myself holding myself more accountable from joining a mastermind group because it holds me accountable week-to-week.
Who’d ever think a 28-year old who works at a restaurant would look so forward to spending some time with, mainly, gentleman a generation older? I find I get more out of that positive hour-and-a-half with them than I do the rest of the week. It’s refreshing to hear everyone being supportive of each other and offering to help in whatever way they can. Everyone brings something to the table — different backgrounds, networks, knowledge, etc. (you know, real diversity). It’s an outstanding way to keep yourselves accountable and honest. It’s a friendly system to keep yourself moving forward.
The idea of a mastermind group has gained popularity from Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. It’s one of the best novels you can read. Put down Twilight, Jason Bourne, or The Four Hour Workweek and start reading it. It’s a book about creating the right financial, career, and lifestyle mindset that every. single. person. needs to read. It’s not a long book. It’s not a new book. But it’s a venerable book that will probably never go away.
So, why should you join a mastermind group? To help others, hold yourself accountable, and meet other people with infectiously positive personalities. Humans are social creatures; find a group that will nurture your ambition through the most positive peer pressure!
Weekly Zen quote, this inaugural edition said by Goethe:
Dream no small dreams for they have no power to move the heats of men.
